SCENE 4

KICHEN INTERIOR

(MAKING TEA) He’s definitely not getting any better, Jen…  He was on about buying a caravan this morning…  Adam hates caravans…  He sees all caravan owners as Goofy in that cartoon with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck…  (CHUCKLES TO HERSELF) The one where they all go on holiday.

(LOOKS WORRIED) Mid life crisis…  Apparently it happens to all of them...  They spend the first half of their lives sowing their seed and playing with toys…  And then all of a sudden no-one wants to play with them anymore…  And most of their toys are broken…  (BEAT)  Well, at least in my Ken’s case.

It’s not that simple, Jen...  He’s tried explaining how he feels.

And how does he feel?

He uses words like Trapped… Frustrated…  Desperate…  Lost.

So he’s not depressed then...  I think he needs to see a doctor…  Get him on some happy pills…  If he needs a second opinion send him round to see me.

It probably would do him good to talk to someone…  He says he wants a change of direction…  A new lease of life…  But he’s not qualified to do anything else…  Programming computers, or whatever it is he does, is all he knows.

Well Adam is a bit of a geek, isn’t he?

(HURT) No, Jen…  Actually he’s not…  You know, I think I understand what’s he’s going on about...  He doesn’t like the perception people have of him...  He wants people to see the real Adam...  He IS trapped…  It MUST be frustrating….  A desperate lost soul…  (SNIFFS)

Couldn’t he go back to college?  And study something new.

Oh no…  Don’t even think about giving him that idea…  I’m a very supportive wife…  Don’t get me wrong…  But we can’t allow Adam to give up his job and go back to college…  What, no income?  And a student loan thrown in on top…  We wouldn’t last six months in this place…

You could always get a part time job, Carol…  To help bring in a little extra.

And who would look after this place?  And see to the kids?  (BEAT)  The au pair would have to go for a start.

Just a thought, Carol…  Sorry.

No, Jen…  I’m right behind helping Adam in his hour of need…  So long as he doesn’t screw things up for all of us around him.
